Second Hop
Sponsorship Program
Why Second Hop Exists:
In Honor of Marshmallow Bun Chia
On May 13, 2019, a white rabbit with red eyes was found on a friend’s lawn in Garden Grove. We did not know it then, but she was a dumped Easter bunny - left alone with no food, no water, no future. Her previous guardians gave her a death sentence by leaving her defenseless in the wild.
We took her home and named her Marshmallow. She became our first rabbit, and the soul behind the Bun Chia Burrow.
Marshmallow got her second chance that night. Second Hop hopes to give other rabbits theirs.
When rabbits arrive at Long Beach Animal Care Services and LA Animal Services with serious medical needs, they're often scheduled for euthanasia (“red-listed”) due to limited shelter resources. Bun Chia Burrow pulls these rabbits as good samaritans, providing medical care and placing them in foster homes until they find forever families. But months of vet bills, surgeries, and rehabilitation come at a price. That's where you come in.
Second Hop monthly sponsorships help cover life-saving medical care for rabbits who were hours from euthanasia.
Meet Our Current Second Hop Rabbits
-

DJ Quick
DJ Quick was found abandoned in El Dorado National Park (Long Beach, CA) with a broken ankle. Instead of letting him suffer, LBACS asked if we could pull him and he received immediate orthopedic care. We were able to save his leg - amputation wasn't necessary.
Despite his injury, DJ Quick is a gentle, curious boy who loves exploring his foster space. He's food-motivated (especially for cilantro) and has already stolen his foster family's hearts with his quiet confidence.
-

Viking
Viking was scheduled for euthanasia at LA Animal Services due to GI stasis (we later determined that he had a major case of bladder sludge and hind leg muscle atrophy). We pulled him just hours before his scheduled euthanasia because we knew he just needed proper care and time to heal.
Viking is proving us right - with proper diet and medical support, he's thriving. He's a sweet, food-motivated boy who does happy binkies when his foster brings him fresh herbs. He's learning to trust humans again, one gentle pet at a time.
How Second Hop Works
1. Choose Your Sponsorship Tier
Pick the monthly level that works for you. Every dollar goes directly to medical care and their daily living expenses. Once you completed the selection through Zeffy, please email info@bunchiaburrow.com with a screenshot of your receipt and mailing address (if you chose Flop Squad or Binky Champion).
2. Get Monthly Updates
Receive photos, videos, and medical updates on your sponsored bunny. Watch them heal, play, and prepare for their forever homes.
3. Receive Thank-You Gifts
All first-time donors receive a small gift (for pick-up at our Long Beach location; can be mailed if shipping costs are covered). Flop Squad and Binky Champion sponsors receive monthly artist-created postcards/other merchandise featuring your bunny, plus behind-the-scenes stories and personality updates.
4. Celebrate Adoption
When your bunny finds their forever home, celebrate knowing you made it possible! Your sponsorship can then be transferred to help the next rescue rabbit.
How We Use Your Donations
All Second Hop funds are pooled to support all rescue rabbits' medical care.

Partnership Information
Second Hop is fiscally sponsored by CAAT (Cat Adoption and Assistance Team), a 501(c)3 nonprofit (EIN: 84-2615582).
What this means for you:
Your donations are tax-deductible
You'll receive official tax receipts from CAAT
100% of funds go directly to rabbit medical care
Professional nonprofit oversight and accountability
CAAT rhandles the nonprofit infrastructure. Bun Chia Burrow handles all rabbit care, fostering, and program management.
For full transperancy - CAAT is a cat rescue. But rescue is about trust and shared values, not species. We partnered with them because they have established 501(c)3 status, veterinary relationships, and proven commitment to proper animal care. This matters more than species matching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sponsor a specific rabbit?
Yes! You can choose Viking or split your sponsorship between Viking and the general fund.
What happens if my rabbit gets adopted?
Your sponsorship automatically transfers to our general fund. You'll receive an introduction email. You can cancel anytime or choose to support a new bunny.
What happened to DJ Quick?
DJ Quick was successfully adopted into a loving home! His adoption link now serves as our general Second Hop Fund. Your contributions through this link support all rescue rabbits - future medical care, current foster rabbits like Viking, and reimbursing CAAT for past rescue medical expenses like DJ Quick's orthopedic procedures. Your sponsorship helps us honor that debt and ensures we can pull and care for the next rescue rabbit in need.
What happens if my sponsored rabbit isn't adopted?
Our goal is always adoption. If a rabbit requires extensive ongoing care, we explore sanctuary placement or permanent residence at BCB. We provide the best quality of life possible for every rabbit in our care.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes! CAAT is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit (EIN: 84-2615582). You'll receive official tax receipts for your donations.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. No contracts, no commitments. Cancel anytime through the donor portal.
How do I know my money goes to medical care?
We provide quarterly transparency reports showing all Second Hop donations received and veterinary expenses paid. CAAT maintains separate accounting for Second Hop funds.
Do you pull rabbits regularly?
We pull rabbits as capacity and funding allow. Second Hop sponsorships help us assist more rabbits by ensuring we can cover medical care costs.
Can I visit my sponsored bunny?
Visits can be arranged case-by-case with advance notice. We prioritize the rabbit's comfort and their foster family's schedule.
What if emergency surgery costs more than expected?
All Second Hop funds are pooled to cover medical expenses across rescue rabbits. Your sponsorship helps build a buffer for emergencies.
