gi stasis: symptoms, causes + what to do

GI stasis is one of the most frequently discussed rabbit health topics online - and also one of the most misunderstood. It is serious, can be life-threatening (if left untreated), and it is almost always a sign that something else is going on. Understanding what stasis actually is, what causes it, and what genuinely helps is the difference between a rabbit who recovers quickly and one who gets worse because the wrong intervention was applied too early.

What GI Stasis Actually Is

GI stasis is when a rabbit's gut slows down or stops moving entirely. Unlike humans, whose digestive systems run automatically, your rabbit's gut is manual. It depends on continuous eating to keep moving. When a rabbit stops eating, the gut slows down. When the gut slows down, bad bacteria takes over causing gas build up, and your rabbit stops eating and pooping. Without identifying and addressing the cause quickly, the situation can escalate fast.

The most important thing to understand: GI stasis is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It is what happens as a result of something else - pain, stress, dehydration, dental disease, an underlying health condition, or any number of other causes. Treating the stasis without identifying what triggered it is incomplete care. This is why giving Critical Care and seeing if it resolves is not an appropriate first response; you may be masking a symptom while the underlying cause continues untreated.

What Causes GI Stasis

Stress
Stress is one of the most significant and underappreciated triggers of GI stasis in rabbits. A new environment, a change in routine, a nearby predator, a loud noise, an unfamiliar person - any of these can disrupt gut motility in a rabbit. This is why we take environmental management seriously at BCB, and why we ask clients about their rabbit's stress levels when a stasis episode occurs.

Dehydration
Dehydration is the other major driver. The rabbit gut needs adequate hydration to move material (like fibrous hay) through efficiently. A rabbit that isn't drinking enough, whether because of illness, pain, stress, or simply not liking their water source, is at elevated risk for stasis. This is one reason open water dishes are generally preferable to water bottles for rabbits: ergonomically, rabbits tend to drink more from dishes, and increased water intake directly supports gut motility.

Underlying health conditions
Sometimes stasis happens because something else is wrong - dental disease causing pain that leads to reduced eating and drinking, an infection, organ disease, or another condition your rabbit has been quietly managing. A stasis episode in an otherwise healthy rabbit with no obvious trigger should prompt a more thorough veterinary workup, not just treatment of the stasis itself.

Post-surgery or illness recovery
Anesthesia, pain, and the stress of a medical procedure can all slow gut motility. Stasis in a post-surgical rabbit is expected and managed proactively by rabbit-savvy vets.

What GI Stasis Looks Like

Stasis develops more gradually than bloat. The signs are often subtle at first - which is why knowing your rabbit's baseline is so critical.

Early signs:

  • Reduced appetite or complete refusal to eat

  • Fewer droppings, or droppings that are smaller and misshapen than usual

  • Reduced activity, mild lethargy

  • Mild teeth grinding (bruxism) indicating low-level discomfort

  • Less interest in cecotropes

As stasis progresses:

  • Complete disinterest of eating and lack of pooping

  • More obvious discomfort - hunched posture, reluctance to move

  • Visible signs of pain on the Rabbit Grimace Scale (eyes squinting, flattened cheeks, ears pinned or rotated back)

  • Audibly quiet gut sounds - in a healthy rabbit you should be able to hear active gurgling (like a brooke babbling); in stasis the gut may go quiet

  • Audibly very loud gut sounds - while a healthy rabbit will have active gurgling, you may hear more sounds akin to pop rocks popping (painful gas)

  • Abdomen may feel full but still has some give when gently palpated — unlike bloat, which feels like an overfilled water balloon with no give at all

  • Slow drop in temperature, dipping under 100°F (A note on temperature range: Normal rabbit body temperature is 101°–104°F. BCB recommends monitoring for action at 101°–103°F; this gives you a window to get to a veterinary hospital before the situation becomes critical. A rabbit at 100°F is already in hypothermia territory. Do not wait.)

A note on uneaten cecotropes: Finding uneaten cecotropes (the soft, cluster-like droppings rabbits normally consume directly from the nethers) is not always a sign of stasis. There are two other common reasons this happens:

  • Antibiotics or other medications can make cecotropes taste unpleasant to the rabbit - they will simply refuse to eat them.

  • A diet that is too rich (too many pellets, too many treats, too many greens) can cause cecotrope overproduction or changes in consistency that make them less palatable. If you are throwing everything at your rabbit who isn't eating in order to tempt them, you may inadvertently be making the cecotrope situation worse.

What Actually Helps

Treatment of GI stasis has evolved. The rabbit veterinary community has largely moved away from prokinetic drugs like cisapride and metoclopramide as a first line response, and is now emphasizing pain management and fluid support as the foundation of treatment.

A rabbit in pain will not eat. A rabbit who is dehydrated cannot move gut contents efficiently. Addressing pain and hydration first removes the two biggest barriers to gut motility returning on its own. Once pain is managed and fluids are restored, many rabbits will begin eating again — at which point the gut has what it needs to start moving.

What veterinary treatment typically looks like:

  • Pain management: usually meloxicam (an NSAID) to address the discomfort that is both a cause and consequence of stasis

  • Subcutaneous or IV fluids: to address dehydration and support gut motility

  • Critical Care: only after the above, and only once a vet has confirmed there is no obstruction. Critical Care provides fiber and volume to help stimulate motility, but it is not the starting point.

  • Appetite Stimulant: depending on your vet’s preference, you may be prescribed cerenia (orally or subcutaneously injected anti-nausea medication that has off-label use as an appetite stimulant), mirtizapine (transdermal/ointment in the ear) or entyce (oral usually)

  • Warmth: a rabbit in stasis will often be cold. Keeping them warm supports recovery.

For chronic stasis rabbits: Some vets will work with experienced rabbit owners to manage mild stasis episodes (assuming the main cause has been determined) at home - typically with subcutaneous fluids, pain medication, and supportive feeding once confirmed safe. This is a conversation to have with your exotic vet proactively, before an emergency happens, not during one.

What Recovery Looks Like

A rabbit coming out of stasis will start producing droppings again - but they may not look normal right away. Early recovery fecal output are often small, misshapen, and may have a mucus coating. This is normal. The gut produces mucus to protect itself during a stasis episode, and it takes time for droppings to return to their normal size, shape, and consistency.

As recovery progresses:

  • Droppings gradually become more normal in size and shape

  • Appetite returns - usually starting with hay rather than pellets or greens

  • Activity level increases

  • Your rabbit becomes more engaged with their environment

Do not assume recovery is complete just because droppings have returned. Monitor closely for 24–48 hours after the initial resolution to make sure motility is fully restored and the rabbit is eating and drinking normally.

Prevention

The single most important thing you can do to reduce your rabbit's risk of GI stasis is manage their stress and hydration.

  • Unlimited grass hay: timothy, orchard, oat. Hay is the foundation of gut motility. A rabbit who is eating abundant hay is a rabbit whose gut is moving.

  • Fresh water daily: in an open dish, not a bottle. Monitor intake. A rabbit who suddenly stops drinking is a rabbit at risk.

  • Minimize stress: stable routines, a safe quiet environment, no sudden changes. If you know a stressful event is coming (a move, a vet visit, a new animal in the home), monitor gut motility closely in the days following.

  • Regular exotic vet checkups: dental disease is a common underlying cause of stasis that owners don't catch until it's advanced. Annual or biannual checkups with a rabbit-savvy exotic vet catch these issues early.

  • Know your rabbit's baseline: from how many droppings they make per day, what those look like, how much they eat, and even how active they are. You cannot identify a deviation from normal if you don't know what normal looks like.

When To Go To the Vet

A rabbit’s GI tract cyles between 3-6 hours. With that being said, a rabbit who has not eaten in 8 hours is already in the danger zone. Do not wait longer than that.
